Facility Operations/Security: Grounds Crew/Turf Management
Assistant Groundskeeper - Indianapolis Indians (Indianapolis, IN)

Job Summary:

Assist the Head Groundskeeper by being responsible for repairing and maintaining the Victory Field playing surface and its surrounding components as a safe, first class baseball field by performing daily turf, dirt and water management; timely fertility and cultural practices; game preparation techniques and short and long-term maintenance planning & budgeting.  The Assistant Groundskeeper will also assist the Facilities Department from November 1 – February 28. 

Essential Functions:

·         Supervise, schedule, mentor and train seasonal interns and part-time game day staff.

·         Assist in the maintenance and repair of the playing field that includes, but is not limited to turf (mowing, edging, fertilizing, aerating, top-dressing, over-seeding, discovery/control of weeds, insects, and diseases) and dirt (infield skin, baselines, home plate, pitchers mound, bullpens, warning track) management.

·         Assist in controlling the entire Victory Field irrigation system that includes, but is not limited to, proper water management of the playing surface, periodic maintenance checks, repairing of leaking lines or valves, and winterization.  

·         Operate and maintain all equipment in a safe manner and keep in excellent working condition.

·         Assist in the preparation of the playing field for pre-game batting practice by setting up cage, screens, mats, and protective field covers.

·         Assist in the preparation of the playing field for game use by grooming field, chalking base path foul lines, painting outfield foul lines, marking coaching boxes.

·         Assist in coordination and execution of infield tarp pulls.

·         Track grounds department inventory (fungicides, pesticides, fertilizers, etc.).

·         Assist Facilities department with duties that include, but are not limited to, HVAC, painting, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, preventative maintenance and other projects during the winter months (Nov – Feb).

Other Duties/Responsibilities:

·         Maintain a positive relationship with umpires to assist in weather related matters.

·         Develop a relationship with home and visiting managers to coordinate pre-game batting practice.

·         Participate in additional professional education

·         Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

·         Two-year degree or equivalent preferably in Turfgrass Management and at least one year related experience in sports turf management, preferably baseball maintenance on a sand-based Kentucky bluegrass field.

·         Ability to obtain an Indiana Category 3B pesticide license.

Groundskeeping Assistant Internship - Indianapolis Indians (Indianapolis, IN)

Job Summary:

Provide high level of support for the entire Indianapolis Indians Grounds Department.

Essential Functions:

 

·         Assist in daily aspects of the grounds operation

·         Specific duties shall include, but not be limited to:

·         Clay work including infield skin, mounds, homeplates, and warning track

·         Turf work including fertilizer and pesticide application, mowing, and edging

·         All cultural practices

·         Basic equipment maintenance

·         Irrigation scheduling and repair

·         Wear management

·         Tarp handling and weather situations

 

Other Duties/Responsibilities:

·         Assist with all extra events including other baseball events, softball games, corporate events, and concerts

·         Inventory management

·         Outside landscaping and irrigation repair

·         Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidate must be currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a two or four year turfgrass or horticultural program at the university level.  Individual should have strong communication and people skills, a high attention to detail, and a tremendous desire to learn.  Must be highly self-motivated.  Baseball field maintenance background is preferred but NOT required

Hours:                40+ hours per week in addition to all home games

Compensation: $8.00 per hour.  Assistants average between $2000 to $2300 per month for the season.

Extra pay is also available for working extra events throughout the season
